Catastrophe Rising

"I'll carry your world"

Hey everyone! Things have been busy for me lately. Luckily, this week I have a bit of a break because of Spring Break. Anyway, here’s what I’ve been up to lately.

Halfway through the Semester

I can hardly believe how fast the Spring Semester has gone. Last week marked week 7 and halfway through a 14 week stretch of classes. So far I’m off to a good start in all of my classes (some better than others) and although it’s been hard working two jobs, I’ve kept my grades on the good side. I did have to tell one of my jobs not schedule me as much because although the extra money is great, it was starting to affect the amount of time I had to get my assignments done. Hopefully I can pick up the effort a bit for the remainder of the semester.

A few minor lifestyle changes

I’ve been making an effort to make a few minor changes to what I eat and how I live my life. When I was at CAPWIC, I found myself going immediately for the sugary, caffeine rich sodas because I needed the energy to keep me going and I was having a hard time finding something I can eat. But after a weekend of putting that stuff in my body, I decided to rethink my decisions a bit.

So I’ve decided to limit my intake of sugary caffeinated drinks, mainly because with every sip, I could feel the enamel waring away from my teeth. Plus there’s all kinds of artificial ingredients and I really don’t want to have any caffeine unless I’m trying to study or something of that nature. So far, I’ve been very successful with this.

Of course, my exception to this is Sprite or Sierra Mist because, well, I love how refreshing lemon-lime soda is and it’s caffeine free.

My second change comes from the amount of time I spend with my electronics. Being an I.T. major, I spend a lot of time on the computer and in the presence of artificial light. So I decided that before I go to bed, I would not spend those last minutes of wakefulness being on my phone but instead reading a book. It helps because I don’t have to deal with the artificial light and I really don’t want my last thing that I see from the day to be my Facebook newsfeed.

Sometimes my books will be poetry, like the works of Tyler Knott Gregson or Lang Leav or Shakespeare. Other times, it’ll be my guidebooks on the Appalachian Trail or even some reading from my textbooks. It’s really helpful for someone who has a hard time falling asleep.

I haven’t been as diligent on this lately but I will pick it back up as I go to bed tonight.

Reconnecting with Old Friends

My friends have inspired me to try and take initiative when it comes to meeting new people or talking with them.

For awhile, I’ve been thinking about an old friend that I first met in middle school. In fact it was someone who initially hurt my feelings back then. We became friends and he admitted to his faults when we were juniors in high school and we kept in touch for awhile after I moved away. Then we drifted apart. So this past Thursday, I decided to shoot him a message.

I was really nervous about it and I freaked out to bunch of my friends as I waited for him to respond. Luckily I had nothing to worry about and we started talking about our lives and what we’ve been up to lately. I told him about my major and about my second family (Alpha Phi Omega); he told me about how he’d become a Marine and how he was looking forward to deploying next year.

One of the most important things I’ve learned in college is that you need to take initiative if you want things to happen. You can’t just wait around and wait for things to fall into place.

Also, as I’ve mentioned on Twitter, sometimes you’ve gotta stop waiting for someone to come back to you and go back to them.

Anyway, that’s it for now. Love you guys.

  1. Sometimes it’s good to give up a few hours at work, and a bit of money, to focus on university. Your mental health is much more important!

I was eating candy as I was reading your post… hahaha. I need to cut down on my sugar intake. I know I go to the gym and all that, but I need to work on my eating habits. I actually never used to have soda but I probably have it once a week now – usually at a social event or when I’m with Nick’s family for the weekend. 🙂

I’m actually also trying to stop using electronics and my devices before bedtime. I am trying to construct a nighttime routine to encourage me to go to bed earlier. 😆

It’s nice that someone who hurt your feelings eventually apologised and you became friends. 🙂 It’s also nice to get in touch with friends whom you lost touch with, especially if they had a significant impact on your life. In the past year, I lost touch with a few friends (they moved interstate), but we managed to meet up recently! 😄 Glad your friend is doing OK. Sometimes it just takes a little bit of communication to get a conversation going again.

I was recently thinking about a more negative time in my life, but at the time I had someone I cared about a lot, and who cared about me. I recently thought about the actions I’d taken then, and I’d been mean, so I thought about getting back in touch just to apologise. But he was abusive to me and I remember that I had stopped being friends with him for a reason, and my behaviour at the time was an acceptable reaction. But yeah, if you are waiting for someone… sometimes you have to be the one to make the move and start the conversation 🙂

  2. I love how you’re setting goals for yourself and also achieving them. I think it’s hard to make yourself step into an uncomfortable situation (at least it would be for me lol), so I think it’s really cool you’re trying new things.

That’s also great you’re trying to control your intake of sugary caffeinated drinks and challenging yourself to read more books. I’ve heard of Lang Leav before and I’ve read a couple of Leav’s poems in the bookstore before. I also know that Elise loves Lang Leav! I couldn’t really get into poetry though :/ I have trouble focusing. I did really like Beowulf though!

And I’m glad that everything turned out well with your friend and that you decided to be the first one to strike a conversation with him. You’re totally right! You can’t expect things just to fall into your lap.

  3. Goals are so important to have and I am happy to hear that you’re also reconnecting with old friends 😀 That’s good that your goals will help you become the better you, you know? Everyone needs goals whether to take over the world or take control of their lives again from anything.

I have a lot of negativity in my life but I am slowly been distancing myself from that, but I am happy that you’re doing better and are on Spring Break! WOOT!

  4. I totally understand what you hre going through with jobs! In my second year of university, I was working a part time job in retail, volunteering, balancing both of those which were very demanding with my studies in Biomedical Sciences! D: It was an effort and I too had to take some time and take less hours closer to exams! It was worth it though!

I’m glad to hear that you decided to take these changes, they are SO important <3 I hope you feel much more energised!

  5. Work and school is a rough combination, so hang in there!

Good on you for limiting your sugar intake 🙂 It’s also good you’re limiting your electronic usage before going to bed. I find that reading on my Kindle doesn’t affect my sleep, so that’s how I get my reading done!

Yay for your friend responding back. Taking intiative do help ^^

  6. Glad to hear that you’ve been doing a great job with school so far. You’re half way there into the semester! School is definitely a priority and the extra money can wait until later. Soda is bad in so many ways. It’s good to cut down your intake so the effects are not as damaging. It’s also good to stay away from electronics right before sleeping. Your brain needs to relax a bit before going to the ZzzZ mode.

It’s great that you reconnected with an old friend! I do agree with you- you do need to take the initiative sometimes. The results can vary, but at least you tried. Who knows, you might get a good feedback!

  7. That is great that your classes are going well so far. XD Times just flies by, that is for sure.
Good luck on eliminating so many sugars and sodas. I had stopped drinking soda for over 9 months but finally caved and started to drink one every now and then. I need to go back to not drinking it though, it is bad on my stomach.
Tea is usually my source of caffeine when I’m not drinking soda or coffee. orz
The sugar part is even harder! lol

  8. Working while at uni can be so stressful! I worked full time while doing my Master’s and I was always so stressed and had to rush so much work because I didn’t have the time. I think it’s good to cut back sometimes!

I’ve started trying to read before bed too. I’m usually still trying to get things done past 11pm and it’s not healthy. I need some dedicated relaxation time!

    Good luck with everything!

  9. I can relate with trying to meet new people. I went years without interacting with anyone. Over time, it became better though. Good luck with everything. 🙂
